“Instant: Document” gives students from Shenkar College and University of Applied Sciences Potsdam the opportunity to work with Alex Heide, Daniel Neubacher in order to produce works which reflect on the questions raised within the ten day workshop. They will complement already existing works by German and Israeli artists to be shown in the exhibition “Picture(s) Now: Contsructions of Temporality since Social Media” at Museum for Photography, Berlin.Starting point of the workshop is photography’s promise to capture the moment. Be it as the “tiny spark of contingency” inscribed into light sensitive material or the notion of “liveness” which derives from digital devices and apps that connect you in “real time”. An undertaking which is an impossible project in itself, since every attempt to capture the now must turn it into the past, a look back, a document, a material (photo) object, hence, a mediated version of it. “Instant: Document” addresses the image-based meditation of the moment. After a short theoretical introduction (reading and discussing of relevant texts) artists and participating design and art students will explore photography’s means of documentation and communication of the “Now”. They will work with a wide range of materials and technologies, such as analog camera-less and instant polaroid photography, as well as diverse apps and platforms. By experimenting with the apparatuses they will question traditional photographic practices. Instead of pitting „digital“ and „analog“ against one another, they will look for ways to make the different technologies, devices and modes of representation communicate with each other. Both, workshop and exhibition can be considered work in progress until the very last minute. Final decisions on finishing up the individual pieces as well as about curational details can only be made shortly before the exhibition starts.
